“You watch my boys. They bite.”
In Perfecting, Kuitenbrouwer writes about a family tragedy of Greek proportions. This powerful, brilliantly told story combines the backwoods of Ontario with the American southwest, pacifism with violence, and religious cults with the search for truth. Using her full arsenal, Kuitenbrouwer brings to life a cast of unforgettable characters — from Curtis, “the anointed one,” to his dragon-lord father; from Martha, who abandons the cult in search of truth, to Michael Dama, the soldier of fortune who leaves the world that he knows in search of justice.
Following her readings at each location, Kuitenbrouwer will answer questions about the novel and about allied topics such as Afghan war rugs, mercenary soldiers in Pakistan and Afghanistan, cults, and many other issues. A rare opportunity not to be missed!
KATHRYN KUITENBROUWER’s visceral writing has inspired comparisons with Alice Munro, Richard Ford, and Flannery O’Connor. Critics described her powerhouse debut novel, The Nettle Spinner, as “beautifully conceived,” “seductively strange,” and “astonishing.” Her new novel, Perfecting, has garnered high praise from coast to coast. Robert Wiersma, writing in The Edmonton Journal, called it “brilliant.” George Murray, writing in The National Post, dubbed it “the most compelling read of the year.” Ariel Gordon, writing in The Winnipeg Free Press, said that “Kuitenbrouwer writes exceptionally well”, describing the novel as “compelling, but brutal.”
Kuitenbrouwer teaches creative writing at the University of Toronto’s School for Continuing Studies and online through the New York Times Knowledge Network. She was formerly the fiction editor for The Literary Magazine of Canada and the magazine editor for Bookninja.ca.
