St. John’s, NL:
‘Atlantic Canada Reads’ is the brainchild of award-winning St. John’s writer Chad Pelley, who is hosting the six-week long contest on his website Saltyink.com
Pelley says he was inspired to put the tournament together by two similar national bouts; CBC Radio’s ‘Canada Reads’ and The Afterword’s ‘Canada Also Reads’ competitions, and is looking for readers across the country to nominate themselves to defend their favourite Atlantic Canadian book, by May 28th.
“Atlantic Canada is the country’s literary goldmine. Salty Ink’s goal is to shine a spotlight on all this talent, with competitions like this one.”
Atlantic Canadian authors have enjoyed much success over the past year. Cape Breton’s Linden MacIntyre picked up the 2009 Scotiabank Giller Prize for his novel The Bishop’s Man, while Michael Crummey of St. John’s and Shandi Mitchell of Halifax were finalists for this year’s Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for their books Galore and Under This Unbroken Sky respectively. St. John’s scribe Jessica Grant has also been honoured with numerous awards in recent months for her novel Come, Thou Tortoise, including the Amazon.ca first novel award and the Winterset Award.
