Matrix: The Drinking Issue

We do it when we’re happy, when we’re sad, when we’re angry. Or maybe we don’t do it at all because we did it too much. Without a doubt, many of us who do it or did it know it has more than a little to with writing. It’s the Matrix Drinking Dossier, and we want your stories and poems! After all, brewmeisters in monasteries in Belgium, distillers in, um, distilleries in Scotland and barons in the ‘Bottle-Your-Own-Wine’ liquor stores in Saskatchewan deserve this. And so do you!



Acorn-Plantos Award

The Acorn-Plantos Award for Peoples Poetry is awarded annually to a Canadian poet, based on a book published in the previous calendar year. The work should follow in the tradition of Acorn, Livesay, Purdy, Plantos and others by being accessible to all people in its use of language and image. The award is open to any living poet who is a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant. The work may be entered by the poet or the publisher. The award itself honours the poet.

The award consists of a cheque for $500.00 CDN and a medallion.

The deadline for entries published in 2009 is June 30, 2010, received.



2010 EVENT Non-Fiction Contest

The Judge a 2009 Book by Its Cover Competition

- Eligibility: the novel must have been written by an Atlantic Canadian author, and the book (or version thereof) must have been released in 2009.
- Salty Ink picked the longlist, the general public will vote for the month of February to create a shortlist of three, and a panel will choose a winner in March of 2010.
- For the month of February, voting is open to the general book-loving public. You can only vote once, but you can vote for up to 3 books



CBC’s Make Your Pitch Contest

Once you’ve made your decision (it’s tough, isn’t it?), make your case. Tell us why this book means so much to you and why you think the rest of Canada would also enjoy reading it. You can do this in several ways, and the more creative, the better!



The Malahat Novella Prize

The Malahat Review, Canada’s premier literary magazine, invites entries from Canada, the United States, and elsewhere for the Novella Prize. One prize of $500 CAD is awarded, plus payment at the rate of $40 CAD per printed page upon publication. Previous winning entries have also won or been nominated for National Magazine Awards for Fiction and the O. Henry Prize. The Novella Prize is offered every second year, alternating with The Malahat Review’s Long Poem Prize.

2010 Deadline

The deadline for the 2010 Novella Prize is February 1, 2010 (postmark date).

PRISM Short Fiction Contest

A $2000 grand prize is awarded to the best original, unpublished story (maximum 25 double-spaced pages) and the winner receives publication payment in the Fiction Contest Issue! Three runner-up prizes of $200 dollars are also conferred. Works of translaton are eligible.

The entry fee is $28 for one story, and $7 for each additional story. All entrants receive one 1-year subscription to PRISM international.
